Another pistol
« on: September 23, 2021, 02:18:08 PM »
A couple of months back I decided to make another pistol , this time in .22 calibre. This will be all aluminium construction. I started it then lost interest . But i have been making swarf again , just for summat to do . I,ve got it holding air and made the breech/ barrel assembly. Next I have to design the hammer and trigger . Then I have to make the stock , something i hate doing . I,m in no hurry , i,ll just do bits and pieces when I feel like it . So, watch this space.

I,ve been doing a bit of work on the new pistol. To save me making a stock from scratch i bought a CP1 stock from my mate on the market. I,m down to figuring out and making the fiddly bits , like the trigger and bolt action. The hammer is one of my specials , a Delrin body with a steel core. I,ve made them before and they work very well and, as far as i know, i,m the only person to do it. It,s in .22 calibre and will have a shrouded barrel. But i,m out of suitable springs for the hammer and am waiting for some to arrive from China. I,ll keep you posted on my progress.

I,ve now got to the point of designing the trigger group. For the first time i,m making it up as i go along , unlike me as i usually do loads of drawings first. I love doing drawiings . I,m doing bits when i can but , at the moment i,m having to sort out a family problem.

I,ve got it working. Filled it to 170 bar and it was bang on 5fpe. And extremely consistant , like 4fps . I think it will also give a good number of shots too. After 25 or so shots it had risen to 5.5 fpe. Then , for some unknown reason it failed to cock. The bolt was jamming. Crazy, it worked well for 50 shots. I,ve removed material from the bolt , which has improved it but still doesn,t explain why it seized in the first place. Bloody airguns.
I,m afraid the family buisiness won,t be going away anytime soon though. I have a 91 year old sister who has dimentia and lives alone and has been unwell lately. Now it,s down to me and my wonderful sister-in-law to keep tabs on her. She can no longer look after herself but social services cant do anything without her permission , which she won,t give. No wonder the Black Dog is back.

More news on the pistol. I got it up and running today . From a charge of 170 bar i got 40 shots with a total of only 7fps down to 130 bar. The power was between 5.3 and 5.5 fpe . I dare not fill it any higher as the alloy tube i,m using is of an unkown grade. I know, a bit risky. Those figures are the best i,ve ever achieved from a pistol . All accidental I assure you  ::) . I have a trigger guard on the way then it,s just a case of stripping it down and painting it . I use barbeque paint , baked in the oven for half an hour to give it a tough, matt finish.

That sounds triffic, those really are impressive figure. ;)

What was the problem with the cocking bolt jamming? :-\

Sorry to hear about your sister. I know it may seem all too easy to say, but try not to worry about the situation. I've learned the hard way that worrying never fixed anything, it only makes matters worse.

Things will sort themselves out....simply coz they can't continue as they are. Social services have a duty of care towards your sister. If she is unable to make decisions for herself, then someone else (next of kin for example) has to be appointed to do so on her behalf.

Fingers crossed for you mucker. \\X

Cheers Gambo. The bolt is a two piece affair , held together by a long grub screw which in turn holds the pin that pulls back the hammer. The screw had come loose causing a jam. No problem soon fixed. The hammer is one of my unique creations. The body is made from delrin with a steel core running through it . Then it has a long pin running through top to bottom to engage the bolt pin and act as the main trigger sear . I believe BSA use something similar. I don,t do any calculations , i,m not clever enough. I just do things by ear so to speak. If it looks and feels right it usually is. Anyway it seems to work. Yes, those figures are amazing given i guessed the valve spring strength and only had one spring i could use as the hammer spring. I might try filling it to a slightly higher pressure by sticking in a bucket of water while doing so. I reckon it should give around 60 shots if used for plinking.
Regarding my sister, she never had children which means i,m the only living sibling who can help. And to gain power of attorny is a long and stressful procedure. Besides, she still has to agree to it. I,ll have to go down the Social Services route.
