Slapheads pistol
« on: June 18, 2020, 03:29:00 PM »
During lockdown i made a .22 pistol for my old mate Slaphead. He,s been on at me to make him one for ages so i finally gave in. This is the guy who hunts with a pistol . And a better shot you won,t find. Well he called me this morning to tell me it is really accurate ( that,s a relief ) and that he dropped a Crow at 45 yards. I,ve seen him in action and i tell you, it,s a sight to behold. He says he has filled his freezer with rabbits pigeons and even squizzers and hasn,t touched a rifle for a year.  I wish. I hate him  ;D

Are you in the UK? I hope not if you're mate is hunting with a 6ft/lb pistol it's probably not up to the task. The same limits obviously don't apply to our yankee cousins but if you have the option of powder burners, why use an air pistol?

Yes , i,m in the UK. Where the hell is Zooport ? Regarding hunting with an air pistol personally I don,t.  But, like all forms of shooting the more you practice the better you get. And this guy has been using an air pistol since he was twelve years old ( he,s now in his late sixties).  In fact he called me last week to tell me he got two rabbits and a squizzer with one of my pistols. Power? Under six fpe. And i,m here to tell you that will do the job. Years ago before i had a chrono i altered a Webley Vulcan by short stroking it . I made a very long ptfe piston seal for it . It was a delight to shoot , almost recoil-less. Then, during a zeroing session , a rabbit popped out along a fence line , and a long way off. I aimed at the tip of it,s ears and slipped the trigger, figuring at that distance i would probably miss by a mile. Imagine my surprise when it did a somersault and lay still. I paced out the distance which turned out to be fifty paces. I couldn,t find the entry hole. A couple of weeks later i discovered a guy who ran an army surplus store had a Scan chrono in the shop so i took the Vulcan and got it tested.  Result , 6.6fpe. I soon returned the rifle back to standard. Oh yes, and that was a .177.
When I first got a laptop i used to enjoy watching an American guy who went by the name of Varmintair. Sadly he has since passed away. But he described how he got into airguns. He and a friend bought Feinwerkbau Target rifles because they had heard about the accuracy of these rifles. Not knowing anything about foot pounds and such , they used them for hunting squirrels and the like. And at distances up to fifty yards. Then they had the rifles tested. They were doing only 7fpe. Needless to say he went on to buy more powerful rifles. Imagine how many rabbits were shot , back in the day , by people using BSA Cadets. Just saying.

Zooport = Newport......coz the place is a freaking zoo......full of animals with very little intelligence. ::)

The low power was why it was recoilless Mel!  ;D ;D

Yup, for years as a nipper I hunted with a Webley Falcon in .22. I bagged stacks of rabbits, pigeons, squirrels etc with it. I didn't have a chrono back then but have since discovered it would have been doing between 400 - 450fps at most. I was using Marksman domes back then, which I've since found out weigh 14gn.....that's a power output of only 5.61ftlbs!!! :o :o

I said the Vulcan was almost recoilless. It felt really nice with almost no recoil , lovely to shoot. Prior to the long range bunny i had shot another one at around 20 yards.
