New lightweight ratter
« on: October 22, 2018, 10:02:50 AM »
I,ve just butchered , er , modified one of my mini carbines to build a light ratter. My old mate , Slaphead gave back to me one of the guns I made for him a few years back just so,s I could build it. It needs a lot of fine tuning as, as always , things never work out first time. It runs off an HPA paintball bottle , same as the little rifles I made a few months back and , at present , is running at only 7fpe. More stripping and fettling needs to be done to get it nearer the 10fpe I need which could be difficult as it only has an 11 inch barrel. No pictures available at the moment as i,m writing this post on a new laptop. ( not mine )

Well I finished it but i,m not happy at the moment as I can only get 7.5fpe max. It,s probably because of the short barrel ( only 11 inches ) combined with the low reg pressure ( 55 bar ). Oh well, it will have to do for now. Here it is .

Well ,i,ve just spent another day in the mancave attempting to drag more power out of the thing. First thing was to lighten the hammer spring pressure as it was guzzling air. The next was to fit a longer barrel. I tried one 1 3/4 inch longer and the power rose to 8fpe . Now it has one 3 1/2 inches longer and is now doing 8.5fpe. I have a new bottle coming that has been set at 900psi so I should get around 9fpe or more hopefully. I also have to test the rifle for accuracy as the barrel is from an SMK 78. Fingers crossed.

Well the bottle arrived yesterday afternoon so it was a case of back into the mancave today. Apparently the reg has been set at 930psi , more than enough. First shots registered only 7fpe due to the higher pressure. So i,ve turned the but stock section into the hammer spring adjuster. All I have to do is screw the but stock in or out to adjust the power. I,ve settled the power at 10fpe - plenty good enough. It now sports a different scope, silencer and barrel. But, there,s always a but, it is still not as light as i,d hoped. Oh well, I could always make another  ;D ;D ;)

Clever bugger!

Does it look any different to the previous pic, Baggy?

Not much , just a bigger bottle and a longer barrel. The nut on the bottom of the drop block is for using a reg tester.

For what reason did you change the scope Mel?

Going by the pics, I'm (educated) guessing the first was a Leapers manufactured (if not branded) item, and the replacement is a Hawke offering?
