Power , or lack of
« on: October 01, 2018, 12:33:20 PM »
I,ve been shooting , with great success , my homebuilt "Mapid" for over a year now. When I fitted a regulated bottle to it a while back I couldn,t , for mechanical reasons , get much power from it , around 10fpe. The problem being it has only a small plenum chamber . I had the reg reset by the bottle seller to 90 bar which seemed OK at the time. Now, on looking at the reg gauge, the needle is sitting at around 75 bar - well down. I checked the power and now it,s only doing 9.3 fpe . I guess the reg spring has " set " a bit shorter so now I have to make a reg tester and shim the spring to get the power back up. Mind you, it still knocks the rats over nicely . Bloody airguns  :D

Yep....it's annoying when you perfectly set a PCP up, only for it to change and need re-tweaking down the line. ::)

Well, it wasn,t the reg. I cobbled together a reg tester today using a new , large glycerol filled gauge. And the result was, a pressure of 900 psi , what I asked for when ordering the bottle. So now I have three choices , A. up the reg pressure. B. somehow increase the plenum volume or C. leave things alone. It will have to be the latter methinks. After all , i,ve been knocking over rats at that power level for a long time now.

Well i,ve spent the whole day making a plenum extension, twice. Why twice ? Because, as usual, I screwed up , making the bloody thing too large. It wouldn,t fit under the barrel. So, I had another go. This time I made it with a smaller diameter . And guess what? It works  ;D. Bang on 10fpe, with only a 3fps variation. These cheapo regs on these cheapo bottles really are the biz. Only downside is, wasting brass, I hate wasting brass  >:(  Anyway, i,ll put it to the test tomorrow night as its back to the wildfowl farm.
