New computer?
« on: June 30, 2018, 10:40:12 AM »
I,ve just had notification from Firefox that they will no longer support the Vista operating system from August. None of the other browsers support Vista either. So, it looks like I will have to fork out for another laptop. I really don,t understand this computer lark so any advice will be most welcome.

Mel, I received exactly the same info, that Vista was due to be unsupported.......so as my old laptop was getting very slow anyway, I bought a new one with Windows10.........WOW, what a difference.

At first, I was dubious about using a new/different system, as I'd only ever used Vista, but I needn't have worried as they are quite similar to operate.......if you can use Vista you'll have no problems using Windows10.

Given the chance, would I ever go back........NO WAY!!!

Another thought is .....Vista may be able to be removed from your computer and replaced with Windows10.......gorra be worth asking if it's doable f you really don't want to buy a new 'puter.

What make did you buy Gambo ? Mine is an Acer Aspire 5735z with a 15.6 " screen. And it,s dead slow. I hear Currys are doing some good deals on ,puters. What do you reckon?  I only need something for basic use , you know , forums , You Tube , E- bay , etc..

@Baggy : Have a look at this site:

Tech Radar

Looking at Argos you can get an Acer Aspire 3 15.6inch screen for 299.99 (50 off).
..........so I packed up and went to the pub.

I got a HP 250, as our last laptop was Hewlett Packard (G80) and it was really reliable.

Like you Mel, I only want it for internet forums, YouTube, ebay.....and also streaming live MotoGP racing.

So you won't be downloading a copy of Windows 7 and installing that to save yourself some coin?

Only if you can upgrade the ram and if the processor is fast enough,
If you do buy a new computer, take the old hard drive out of the old one, you can buy hard drive adapters so you can use the old hdd as an external removable drive, (all the heat sinks and 12v fans come in handy as well)

Don't forget that you can take a laptop battery apart and mine the rechargeable 18650s from it.
