Guess what- hw98 177 short stroke.
« on: July 30, 2016, 10:02:39 PM »
Well the postman handed me over a little package today.

 A tinbum maxi pro kit.

This one is suited to 177,so it's around 10mm piston head as opposed to 12 for a 22.

I'll be starting fiddling with it in the next couple of weeks, or maybe tomorrow-who knows eh :).
I plink , therefore I am.

I've got a soft spot for the 98,kind of the black sheep of the weihrauch range, never see them second hand very often.should improve it I've shot a couple of short stroked springers, very impressive

You know I never really noticed hw98.Untill I walked in to Redbecks and saw one on the wall, I bought one there and then on looks alone.Superb gun. When I got it home it was shootin aaf 8.4 at well over 13ftlb, sweet as a nut, not at all uncivilised, seemed a shame to castrate it.

 All done and dustered,sort of.

In the kit is a new spring with fitted guides, but the spring is I think US spec ,it's longer and wound at a tighter pitch. So reduced it down in 2 stages as to get it as close to between 10.5 and 11 with the usual suspects.I think I lopped off around 1 1/2''.
The delrin piston extension on this one is 9.3 mm, took abit of time deburring it and alls good, fits on snug.
Also removed home brewed piston liner as it was galling on the spring, left the factory one in situ, the guides are a good fit, there's zero twang with a minimum greased spring.
Checked the piston for a piston weight, not one in.
 Assembled it blah de blah..

 Put a few through the chroney,jsb pellets  8.4 760 10.8,7.9 781 10.7 and 7.3 803 10.45.

 Shoots wonderful, short sharp recoil.
Will be putting scope on after tea for shake down tests. It used like falcons at longer range.

 :D :D.

Not quite done with this one, whats holding me back is it's the only rifle with no silencer, so I can't shoot it all day long in the garden while altering things. I've now experimenting with  a roll/box out of auto industry sound proof matting to shoot through, it blanks loads of noise down to a shrill whisper,a couple of sq ft volume with apertures either end and supported on a tripod, works a treat, just need to make a proper frame for it.

What I want to achieve is more velocity from the light pellets such as falcons,hn green,hobbies,r10 match and less from aa8.4 and superfields, hnftt etc.

I may or may not be able to this with less spring and a little extra weight on the piston. Seems counter intuitive to me but it's worth a try.
Though this kit is specifically made to be used with the piston weight removed ,which incidentally was not fitted anyway, with the understanding it would sharpen recoil abit. If I get stuck with it i'll post something up on bbs , I'm sure tinbum will or some of the other tinkerers will tell me where I'm going wrong. In fact I may post this evening.
