The 35 has a piston diameter of 30 mm which is the same as the 80 but it is a lot shorter as you would expect because of the shorter cylinder hence shorter stroke which = nice shot cycle.A good bedded in early version with the leather seal fitted is even better.
As with all HW's relube & guides that fit will improve things.

'' with the leather seal ''  how would a divvy like me know if it's a leather seal or plastic. Are there any tell tale signs? Also can replacement leather seals still be sourced?

''It surprising that the power is very similar from all the different weight pellets'' it is but it shouldn't be  -  i'll keep my big mouth .

As for the seal you would only know for sure after stripping it,as a guide the early ones did not have a safety catch, then they had a single sided safety these are likely to still retain the leather seal but many have been converted to synthetic.
The leather seals are available again but go fairly fast.Dont let it put you off they can be made nice with the synthetic so long as the T.P is not too big but you can always size it down with an insert.

Am I to assume leather seals are more forgiving of bigger diameter tp.

Is it more likely the older ones are more likely to have been tampered with tp wise?

It seems that way for the larger port. The most common size T.P for the 35 is 3mm.
It's said that the older 35 E has a 4mm T.P which i do have but it was second hand so not 100% but it looks standard. The early ones were around when drilling the port was the thing to do so more chance of them being messed with.

The Vixen 35 had their ports opened up as well to 3.4 with leather seal & smaller diameter & thinner gauge spring which works really well.

Some love them others hate them.
Lots of different models were made through the years since they were introduced. Its probably the longest produced model & still in production now as the HW50 which is older still.

I love 'em.........primarily for their 'old school' 1970's looks........which harks back to a carefree time of innocence.......and conjures up memories of young boys playing football in the park, after school, using jumpers for goalposts.......................(older watchers of The Fast Show will know what I'm on about! ;) ;D).

Seriously, I do like the 35, the only things about it I'm not struck on are the groove which can be worn into the front face of the cylinder by the barrel latch if a lazy cocking procedure is adopted, eventually stopping the breech seal from, errrrrr, sealing..........and the very low comb to the cheekpiece, which becomes largely ineffective if a scope is used (but if fine when using open sights).

Apart from that, the 35 is a peach........indestructible build quality, plus it introduced us to that sublime Rekord trigger unit.......something we sadly take for granted these days. :-\

I don't think we need to know what's ''conjured up ''in your mind of partially unclothed schoolboys, thankyou very much.

Anyway, I'll eventually get around to getting one in 22, I'd like one of those odd looking ones with the long barrel and open sights.
