Hi all,  just passed the DW 4" over a chrony with some nice RWS R10 pellets.  I've abandoned domed pellets due to poor indexing - maybe I should just bore deeper?

Average FPS was 290, though the conditions were a bit cool.  Obviously lower than the 380-ish I get with .177 BB.

That equates to around 1.6 ft/lb with the 8 grain R10's.

Just so's you know   :)

Are the lead pellets a lot lighter in the bore than the BB's were, John?

For bb, I've been using Crosman Copperhead which come in at 5.2 grain (I think)

So the lead pellets are nearly half as heavy again as the BB's are, but are they also tighter in the bore, John?

Hard to say Mr Gambo.  They definitely sit tighter in the cartridges, so I would hazard a 'yes' to your question.

Of course, we have to factor in my home done drilling too.  A proper craftsman could get them spot on with no chance of leaking co2 'around' the pellet, if you get my meaning.

A craftsman I am not.   :-[

Oh, OK then.....I take your drift!!!

Have you (carefully) tried using a cleaning rod to push a pellet through the bore, to ascertain how much friction there is?

As you say the power/velocity lose could be from/a combination of many other factors, one of 'em being that excessive bore friction might be robbing velocity from the pellet.

Ah-ha!  I think you may have identified a problem there Gareth.   I just tried pushing a pellet through the bore manually, and there was a definite sense of 'drag' there compared with a bb...

All the more reason to find myself a 4" rifled barrel I think!
