In the last F1 race the finishing positions were...

1/. Red Bull

2/. Red Bull

3/. Mercedes

4/. Mercedes

Now how is that a test of driver skill?.........I'll tell you, it isn't............all it goes to show is how much money the 'team' you drive for can afford to spend.........as I said, F1 is no longer a sport, moreso a contrived and controlled corporate business.

Yes but it doesn't finish like that every time - there are different faces on the podium. Are you saying that you don't get the same faces on the motorcycle podiums - if you do, perhaps that's down to the team with the most money then!  ;)

It amazes me, that a team designer sits down each year with a fairly blank piece of paper and designs a car from the ground up.
From one season to the next - there is rarely a part that is the same or is interchangeable with the previous seasons car.
Lots of different disciplines are involved in the design and construction, not least of which are aerodynamics design, very high tech electronics, etc etc.

The designers constructers must adhere to a basic Formula (hence Formula 1) and design and construction rules.
A car is designed, constructed, built and tested.
All of the competing teams cars are different, there are no interchangeable parts (tyres apart) on them, no parts are the same on any of the cars unless a generic part has been chosen somewhere in the fuel/electronic systems by chance.
Drivers go out on a circuit and race around a circuit of differing lengths and speeds/corners and will compete in a race against each other, of many laps.
Yet, at the end of the day - the difference in time between them can be down to hundreds of a second - sometimes parts of seconds over a whole race. - Amazing!
A car can be competitive only if it is reliable and finishes the race, has been designed and constructed in accordance with the rules - the winning cars are checked for compliance at the end of each race, including the quality of fuel they use.

The incorrect selection of tyres during the race, the wing settings, choice of brake pad materials, gearing cassette, can all go towards a car being uncompetitive in a race,  once these have been chosen, some are not able to be changed for the race (gearing etc) so get that wrong for the circuit and it's purely down to the drivers skill and determination and the pit crews 'management' of the race that will determine the outcome.

You are always going to get an outstanding team / combination / driver that manages to eke out that extra performance and result - this is why the better drivers tend to migrate to the more successful teams, in order to have the most competitive car and make their chances of winning the race / championship better. Indeed, Ayrton Senna was exactly the same and migrated to the team that was most likely to give him a competitive car!

The imposition of rules on design and construction etc, have given small teams like Lotus and Force India a more competitive edge this year - that has to be a good thing surely? Not to mmention the improvements in car safety which makes deaths like Senna's less common although the risk is always going to be there when pushing the boundaries of car design and construction, speed etc.

Formula 1 is just like any other commercialised sport - like football, rugby, motorcycle racing and cricket, etc, etc - it's an entertainment and delivers what the punter wants and expects!
