It's a BSA.......
« on: January 15, 2018, 08:14:32 AM »
....... well, that's what I've been told.

Now, before we start ANY discussion on the rifle concerned I'd like to get one thing out in the open straight away; it's a .177.

There! I've said it. The cards are on the table.

I will now completely disown the gun. It's not mine. It belongs to a friend.

Honest.

He's asked me to find out as much as I can about it. Age, model etc.

Ready?

here it is:

I've emailed BSA with the serial number to see if they can tell me anything about it but I'd love to hear from you guys on the Planet if you can tell me anything.

(I should also say that it works. Against my advice my mate cocked and fired it empty. It made a Hell of a crack.)

Well ................. BSA drew a blank.

They recommended that I check out The Countrystore and Airgunspares.com.

So I've contacted them.

I'[m surprised BSA couldn't tell me anything......................  ???

Well, Mick, you might not be an expert but I've Goggled the Improved model D and I think you might be right. I applaud you for your knowledge.

Looking at pic's of the gun elsewhere on the Galactic Network http://www.fluidr.com/photos/tjm_45k/sets/72157675708122825 I think my friend's could be in better condition but I think its identity has been established.

I think it may be a "Junior" with a "Juvenile" stock on it. I'll have to get the tape measure out to get some dimensions.

Looks indeed likely to be an Improved Model D, made between 1910-1911.........but more info needed (length and weight) to be absolutely sure. ;)

One of the guys at the club brings in his grandfather's one of those, complete with bodged open sights that look a bit like barbed wire.

Hi

I have a couple of Model d Beesas,  I can't look in my Hillers guide as the missus has 'Cleaned my bookshelf'  >:(

The two I have are seral as follows, Bottom one is 46495, The one above is 11869, The second from bottom is also .177 and was a gift from a nice chap in Wales, It hasn't shot a pellet since the 70's when the piston rod broke, He had an engineering friend reproduce one but it wouldn't latch!, Turned out it was a few thou too short but the Dremel with a coin shaped grind stone in took just a couple of minutes to reduce the hook and now it shoots well although it's in need of a mainspring as an inch had broken off when I stripped it (It's a flatwound spring!!)..

The .177 is impressed with 'The BSA Air Rifle' atop the cylinder, The other one (.22) was etched, Every bit has gone but the serial is still impressed, From memory it was dated to around 1929..

I also had to find a countersunk screw and fit a piston seal to the one that wasn't working..

The top two are BSA Standards, Both are number 2 bore..

John  :)
