18650 batteries for IR Torches and Whatnot
« on: December 15, 2017, 01:08:37 PM »
I've just got hold of some 18650 batteries which were unbelievably good value (i.e. free, gratis and for nothing).

An unused laptop battery passed over the desk at work.

Pop the plastic case off, remove all the gubbins (wires, clips, circuit boards, sticky tape etc.) et voila; 6 (yes, SIX) 18650 batteries for nowt.
..........so I packed up and went to the pub.

Lots of people use them, me included. My mate took one of his laptop packs apart and gave me some. My own laptop battery is fubared so i might take apart to add a few more to the collection. You,re right , they are good quality batteries, samsung or panasonic i believe.

years ago i got some battery protection circuits from fasttech
https://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10003003/1225103-wh-18650a-4a-protective-circuit-board-for-18650
there is a few different ones to pick from (i got the 2A rated ones as back then that was the highest amp rating they did) the ones shown are the 4A,
there is a bit of soldering to do, you will also need something like these
https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p4712.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.TRS0&_nkw=50+pcs+7.5cm+x+0.5cm+Solder+Tab+For+AA+AAA+SubC+10440+14500+18650+battery&_sacat=0
some https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=High+Temperature+Resistant+Kapton+Polyimide+Tape+-+Tan+%2818mm*30m%29&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.XHigh+Temperature+Resistant+Kapton+Polyimide+Tape+.TRS0&_nkw=High+Temperature+Resistant+Kapton+Polyimide+Tape+&_sacat=0
(this is better than black electrical tape and is needed to insulate the batt) you will also need some 18650 battery heat shrink (the thin stuff or you might have problems getting the battery into torch housings) https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/18650%20battery%20heat%20shrink
