Thumbhole Walnut Stock Refurb
« on: March 14, 2017, 05:42:59 PM »
So I've been refurbing a Stock for a wee while now, I'll do a proper write up but here are a few pics of it from the weekend:

I sanded it down to 800grit including wire wool between grades, this is only part way through piling and it's still looking better every coat. I am really taking
My time with this one as it's a really nice piece of wood I feel it deserves much patience, very thin coats of Phillips Walnut oil is what I'm using.

So this is the stock from my .22lr Anschutz 1417, I've always known that under that 'orrible factory varnish there was a lovely piece of lumber lurking.

A few years ago I rubbed the stock down and my intentions were good however before I'd properly finish sanded it I needed to use the rifle, rushed on a few coats of oil and ahhhhhhh....you could clearly see sanding marks it was a terrible effort and I was well annoyed with myself.

So here we are a few years on and 6 or 7 weeks ago I decided to redo it, thinking I have plenty of time before I'll need to use it, also now I have a few other rifles I can turn to in this ones absence, not least my Daystate.

I spent hours and hours, probably around 30 hours, sanding it, I spent a further 5 evenings past the point I felt it was ready for oiling redoing certain bits all the way back from 120 grit up to 800 including the wire wool in between grits.

I made sure this time it was properly ready, the first few coats of oil were applied very carefully to seal the end grain around the pistol grip, the thumbhole and on the foreend without darkening them down too much, so you can still see that beautiful grain.

This must be at least it's tenth coat of oil, all of which have been very sparing and all have been allowed to fully dry between coats, at least 24 hours in between each. I have on ocassion placed the stock in direct sunlight to heat the wood gently, it's been in my airing cupboard a few times again to gently heat the wood (my airing cupboard is mildly warm). I really want to make a good job of it this time, patience is key I feel.

I do have some pics of it after it was sanded and before oil so I will get those up soon.

I really love the tiger striping in the butt of the stock, it follows through and round the thumbhole and to me is stunning, the cheekpiece side of the stock ain't too bad either ;)

Did you use a grain sealer, alkanet or stain before applying the Phillips Walnut Oil?

Nope just got the grain extremely flat using up to 800 grit, wife will then used the palm of my hand to flat it out more using my skin. First few coats of oil were very very thin and carefully applied to seal the end grain.

One small snag with that, his work gloves are steel gauntlets, you know what he's like when using tools or his hands ::)
