Mapid mod
« on: December 22, 2016, 01:16:12 PM »
I decided to try a little mod on the Mapid. I thought i,d fit a shroud/silencer to the old girl. So I bought some 30mm carbon fibre tube and this is the result. No quieter but better looking IMO. Lighter too.

So the tube eventually turned up unmashed then?

The first one got crushed, the second went missing and the third arrived via Royal mail.

Hard to say. I,ve just tried it next to a silenced AA410 and it sounds only slightly louder. The idea was to make the rifle shorter. It is , by around four inches. Where the original silencer fitted there is now a fitting with radial slots cut into it. This holds the front of the shroud in place and acts as a baffle. When the blast of air hits the baffle some of it is deflected upwards through the slots and back down the shroud. In front of the baffle i,ve fitted a hair curler surrounded with felt. Normal silencers have two and a half curlers inside but, to keep the length down I only had space for one and a half. I don,t think the rats will know the difference  ;) I could always try putting some wadding around the barrel to see if that improves things. Undo one 3mm screw and the whole thing pulls off. I had to fit higher mounts but this means it will shoot flatter between 15 - 35 yards. Just aim a bit higher on the close stuff. Easy. Using H&N Sniper mediums this rifle is silly accurate. I hope H&N start making them again soon as I could easily run out next year.  :)
