DIGITALSCALE AC-100 electronic pellet scales
« on: January 17, 2012, 01:05:44 PM »
I ordered these > http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/350523795130?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 off ebay the other day, just to see how accurate they were for their very cheap asking price, compared to other much more expensive electronic scales.

On receiving the scales this morn, I can now give this appraisal of 'em.

They turned up (in a jiffy bag) the next working day after ordering, so no complaints about delivery times.

The scales came with batteries (2x AAA), a leatherette pouch, and a set of detailed instructions. As the unit is made in China, it's nice to see the instruction are all in English...and good English at that, so no trying to decipherer what the hell it says.

The lid (also doubles as a larger tray) was a bit tight on mine, due to some plastic flashing that hadn't been trimmed off properly. Now that it has been done with a craft blade, the lid attaches and detaches both easily and smoothly.

The external silver paint finish doesn't look as if it's going to be that durable though, as it seems to be un-lacquered polyester basecoat or cellulose. I could envisage these scales getting to look quite tatty fairly quickly, if not handled with a reasonable amount of care, if that sort of thing bothers you.

The unit weighs in g, gn, ct, ozt, and dwt, but as they will be used for weigh pellets, I set the Mode to gn (grains).

Now to the nitty gritty....how accurate are they??

I got a .22 Air Arms Field pellet, which are well known and accepted to weigh 15.9gns, and placed it on the tray......the reading said 15.9, which was a good start.

I then weighed a small scope mount screw, which came in at 14.1gn, then I cross referenced that to three other makes of electronic scales I have (Salter, MTM, and Diamond), and all three came to within 0.1gn of each other, which is within the stated tolerances.

I then took a 50g calibration weight from the Salter scales, and placed it on the cheapo Chinese 'DIGITALSCALE' to see how it fared. The result was a reading of 50.07grams, proving these budget scales are every bit as accurate as other scales costing over 15 times as much.

So, as you need to know the weight of your pellets (don't trust the figures given on the tin) to go part way to helping you stay legal with regard to airgun power output, and you haven't yet got a set of pellet scales, these are more than up to the job of providing an accurate weight measurement for you.

Considering their 'bargain basement' price (7.98 plus 1.99 P+P), they offer excellent value for money over much more expensive scales, yet they are no less accurate.....so why waste your dosh on anything else?

In fact I'd go so far to say....get 'em while stocks last!!!!

;D Cheers mate, I've been debating whether or not to buy a scale as it seems such a time consuming ballache to weigh all your pellets , BUT at that price you can't go wrong.I've never in all my shooting career weighed a single pellet, never too late to start.
TA.
Gary.

I don't bother to weigh every pellet Gary, I just use the scales to either...

A/. Check the weight of pellets when setting the power of a gun, to ensure it remains legal.

B/. Use the scales to weigh out quantities of pellets, rather than manually counting them out for each charge when using a PCP.

You Boys won't be sorry you ordered them, I'm sure!!  ;)

How much did you have to pay for 'em when you picked them up in person, Paul?

They were 7.99 but being the genourous Yorkshire man that I am I gave her a full 8.00. I know my money will not last if I keep giving pennies away like tht but I was frozen and wanted to get home. But not to let anyone down I did ask if there was any discount as they didn't have to pay any paypal fees.  ;D
