help
« on: March 21, 2012, 10:00:32 AM »
on one of the bike sites I'm on, we help each other by haveing an emergency contact list,
its a way of knowing where help is available up and down the country, would it not be usefull
on here if say someone wanted a gun looked at or they broke down in a stange to them location,
people willing to help could list a post code and contact number or e-mail,
what are you thoughts on this.

I asked about something like this 'trains. It's felt that it is covered through the nature of the site in general; ask and you shall receive type thing.

However, seeing as you have raised it again, I would have to say that a live list would mean the person requiring help could actively seek help right away rather than having to wait untill someone read their post. Some members don't visit the forum every day so it could mean a long wait, just when time is of the essence.

I think a list of people able and keen to offer help (not of a financial interest) would be beneficial to all.

For example: Nic Wenham (Me) Able to offer a spare pair of hands for just about anything in the Dorset area. Specifically good with design, metalwork and messing with motors.

I stress that I see this being voluntary approach to helping others, as paid for serivices already have a slot.

Well there is nothing stopping anyone starting such a thread in Open Dis.....but are you really sure you want to post your personal/contact details on open forum for the whole world to see?

I know I personally wouldn't want to do it......I will only pass on my details to trusted members....I would never post them anywhere any casual visitors/guests/spammers/rogues/scammers etc etc could see them.......unless I wanted to be bombarded with spam advertising...or worse still, be a victim of identity theft.

I realise the very noble ethic behind this idea, but I'm sorry to say, due to the way of the world in which we unfortunately live in today, I personally feel the risks are too great.

But if anyone did need help when in/near my neck of the woods, then I would be more than willing to offer any assistance I could, if I was contacted via PM, if they didn't already know my contact numbers.....but I'm not going to post my details on open forum sorry.

Point taken Gambo and with hindsight agreed with.

I still think that a thread / list of people wanting to let others know that they could help wth would create a good skill / support base. But filter requests through PM's as the desired party sees fit.

i agree my thoughts are a sticky of helpful member locations if someone was traveling in that direction and needed local details, good hotels, gun shops, things to see.or maybe a meet up with fellow members.
most definitely done by PM only.

As we all (or should) have filled in our Locations, it is easy to see (or even ask) who lives in an area you are due to visit (holiday for instance) so PM's could be sent requesting contact details before departure, so determine who is available in case of a drama/emergency.

If for example, I was heading down the M5 toward Exeter, I could PM Dezyboy or Toof to see if they would be kind enough to offer help/advice/assistance if needed.
